OK, well it finally cooled off a bit outside.

After tearing it down, the motor TURNED with a wrench and chain is still in one piece, so motor is OK. Thank God (that I question).

The bang was SO violent I don't get how it wasn't worse. It really freaked me out. I always say to my wife "don't worry untill I do" and typically I'm right. This one out did me.

I think I can narrow it down to electrical. I still have plenty of battery power. There is a relay behind the spedo cluster that is clicking loudly. Anyone ever have this one go out?

I have not been able to look it up in the manual yet, I'm wiped out. Could this be it? Its covered by a rubber jacket typically.

Normally if you cook a relay it isn't violent.
There's also a smell of burning in the air.
Good news that the motor turns over - you may have lost a piston though
That would explain the bang.
Shining a torch down the plug hole may help, or put your finger over the plug hole and have someone turn the motor - if you get compression the pistons are OK.

The skid from the rear wheel just means
1 compression is good - mine does it too, if I'm going too slowly and can't jump on the seat in second. First gear will skid every time !

Best of luck !

Oh for sure Steve-o - me I'm just the perennial pessimist.
My son had a 550 go bang - Blew a hole in the side, chucked all the oil all over the back tyre, bike went west, wrecked his knee - and his pro football career. Not a good thing.
However, a big bang could be a major electrical failure - let's hope that's all it is.
Fingers Xed
My other question is WHY did it go bang................? F motors don't go poof at 45 MPH.

HEHEHEHE
I'd have paid money to see your face that day Steve-o.
Coffee stains on the monitor again !
Could a coil go bang like that ? It has a helluvan electrical charge - if it shorted.....?
There would have been some marks/oil from the coil (?) under the tank though..........
It's a mystery we're trying to solve while blind and deaf - not easy..............
