Intermittent shutdown
Hello Been riding my 88 !000 pretty much every day to and from work @26 mi each way . Bike is running fine except for 2 issues. after driving to work with no problems Leaving bike all day Starting and running back home . I will get a little stuttering with some cylinders misfiring and a few seconds later the engine stops dead. I think this is a venting problem as I can remove the cap and sometimes that will let the engine start and run normal the other times I have had to remove the side panel and crack the fuel line and wait until fuel comes out. I have replaced `the fuel pump with a gravity fed system kept the stock fuel filter and made new lines using some of the stock hose, some 3/8 hose and a length of 3/8 aluminum tubing to make my 180 bend, I tested the new fuel line setup and it flows very well. I have double checked to make sure there is no kinks or pinches. I'm just not sure where to ck for the vent? I have looked at the fuel cap , tried blowing air through different holes and am not sure if I am doing anything, Is there another thing that I am missing? Is there a specific way to check it?
Second issue is that I have replaced my clutch plates and springs situation is like i,m in 3rd gear, going to pass [city traffic]about 3000 to 5000I whack the throttle and it just sips about 300-400 rpm and then catches and works fine up and in the next gears Replaced with Barnett plates Honda steel plates and Barnett springs

Two things come to mind - the internal tank strainer mesh may be gunked up
and as you said yourself the tank breather line is blocked.
On my 87 the breather line was rusted shut and I could not get it open so I drilled
a ting hole in the fuel cap right under the key flap through the thinnest part of the cap
to the little D shaped recess you see from the under side (87 - 88 only)
never had any fuel splash out and if it did it would simply flow into
the overfill line

Thanks Sprock, Where is this mesh and breather line? Is it on the fuel cap or in the tank? How would I check it? Is the internal mesh filter the one on the fuel petcock?
drain tank unscrew petcock - it's in the tank and attached to
the petcock - it can be discarded as replacements are no longer
available unless purchased as an entire new assembly. Bout 80$
also each float valve in each carb has a mesh screen too &
the bad news is they all contribute to fuel starvation when
clogged up with rust and crappola.
(indicative of a rusting tank I might add) - ask me how I know this !

Best way to clean a rusty tank is use a acid cleaner and some small stones or some chain let it sit for a little and agitate tank. then drain tank and use a tank sealant to seal it.
Message to sprock
Have checked mesh on petcock OK and checked screens on carbs all are clean,
I do think it is a vent problem . How do you check the vent on the gas cap>

There's isn't one - you make it with a small drill hole in the gas cap
edit: Got bored added pics
hope this helps
The tank has a factory breather line integral to the gas tank itself
which usually becomes rusted and blocked and is a beeeeatch to
get open - sometimes you can - other times you can't.
Oh and for tank sealing I used Caswell Platings Dragons Blood Sealer
on my 87 - which absolutely sealed off the already blocked gas tank
breather line

Unless you lay the bike down - you'll never get gas splashing out or water getting in (key flap and raised key pedestal)
