Default Installing the front wheel brgs. the spacer

I am putting new bearings in the front of my 91, and i don't see anywhere that anyone mentions the spacer. What i need to know, is how much slop should be in the spacer. The last time, i must have tightened the brgs to tight, as i had an early failure on the left side. Rode it 250 miles back home from our camping trip. Very scary.

There shouldn't really be any play in the front or rear wheel bearings, if that's what you mean by 'slop', the spacers just slot into the dust cover seals.

Tighten the front axle bolt to the correct torque setting, you can find all settings in the manuals section here :-

Having said that, every time I've had my bike MOT'd they have either mentioned the front wheel bearings, or even failed it on them (two different garages). The last time I got the garage to change them as I was convinced I must be doing something wrong and the very next MOT, the same place mentiones them again after only a couple of thousand miles. Don't know why, I've even changed the front axle, just something I have to live with, doesn't affect the ride at all and the play is only minute.

Spacers in the w/shop manual are called "collars" ... left and right are different sizes...

This "how to" download I did - with pictures - might help ......

There shouldn't be any slop. It spaces the the inner races of the bearings.
In your first photo it looks damaged, if so it should be replaced.
