I now have smooth shifting
Well I finally have smooth shifting.
I had to replace the seals in the left side cover so while I was in there I replaced both return springs (yes there are 2)and the detent arm. I also had a new bush machined for the gearchange and made up some new linkage.
It now feels like a new gearbox.
After poking around in there I have come to the conclusion that the whole arrangement really is a ****house design. Looking at the shiftdrum the distance from 1st to 2nd is quite huge, hence the big crunch when you go from neutral to 1st. The only good part about the design is that because the gear lever doesn't directly turn the shift drum there is less chance of damage to the gearbox in the event of an accident.
If I had my time again I would've like to have replaced the shift pawls and shift drum cam to see if it would take some of the slack out of it.
So if ya got a high mileage with ****ty shifting and a spare few hours give it a go.
Cheers
Rob
