Default Hurricane 1000 vs TL1000R...The Hurricane Lives!

All
Played around with a coworker the other day. He wanted to see what the Hurricane had in her. I was game.. to say the least. His bike is great looking Suzuki TL1000R. You all know I have a 88 cane that is stock with 54k on her. Just remember I am a solid 240 lbs and he is a solid 200 lbs.
We went back to deserted industrial area to have it out..

We went from a 10 mph roll three times. I jumped him good on all three runs. Pulled a couple bike lengths right at the start. On all three runs my front wheel came off the ground on the 1-2 shift, carried it about 10 ft each time. On the first two runs he edged me out at the very end. We only ran about 1/8 mile on the first 2 runs. The last run we went about 1/4 mile. On the 10 mph roll on he gave me the nod he was ready. I hit it hard pulled him 2 lengths. he regained about a length and a half. I held him off by a half a length to the finish. Not sure what the speed was but we were flying. These two bikes are really close, as it really is a drivers race.

He was in awe after we ran. He complimented the Hurricane. He was pretty impressed. I was to as I know the TL1000R is a fast bike. I think he might get me on the very topend if we were to run a mile. But don't really want to push the cane that hard for that long.

I was proud of my bike. It was a superbike back in her day and still holds her own against most of the bikes today. Love my cane !

He he..... Can I share your smile please?
There are still not many new bikes that can really **** on a Hurricane. Always a blast trying though.
Good tale. Cheers Matt.

To be fair, the TL is (was) a fast bike, but not that fast. Remember, the Japanese V-twin sport bikes, TL 1000 and RC51, were made to compete with Ducati in superbike competition. At the time, Ducati had an edge on the Japanese inline fours because superbike rules limited fours to 750cc while twins were limited to 1000cc. Thus, the TL1000 and RC51 only had to be faster on the track than the 750 fours at the time. They didn't make anywhere near the power that the 1000cc fours did. When superbikes rules were changed to allow 1000cc fours to compete, the days were numbered for the Japanese V-twins. Nevertheless, congrats on schooling a much newer and more modern machine.

Thanks, it was a blast. I had heard so much about the TL1000R, that they had a ton of torque and kill most bikes on a roll on. But in this case it didn't happen. I think the 16/44 sprockets really helped the cane.

Not sure what the weight is of the TL but I am sure its lighter than the cane. Both bikes are rated at 130 hp (not at the rear wheel) not sure of the torque on the TL but the cane is around 74 lbs.

1 NO way
2 You can run your 'Cane all day at under the redline.................
The TL is a fine bike.
The Hurricane is a better bike.....
Consider the age difference........
I have a friend with a Ducati ST4 who used to tease me about how fast his bike was on pull away, until I decided to show him.
The dark stripe from my rear tyre went to over 100ft and blew him into the weeds.
He's never tried it again.
His is a 2001 model. Mine was born in 1990.
It is though, as Paco says, the twins aren't as quick as the fours, or everyone in SBK would be riding them.

Here in the UK the TL's nick-name is Widow Maker', has a reputation as a bit of a 'tank slapper'. Don't know how tru it is but it's a great looking bike.

I raced a thunderstorm once, but it cheated and cut the hypotenuse, I guess it could read the word Hurricane on my tank and got intimidated. Nun the less, I didn't get wet or blown into the other lane, and the storm didn't have to stop for the construction flagger either. Thanks for the story.

Update- the hurricane held off the TL 1000R by a few feet all the way from 2nd gear through 5th gear on a topend run. Then we both backed off. Never hit 6th, was no need. All he said after that was "man that is one sleeper of a bike and a fast one at that. " The hurricane lives!
