I bought some H4 bulbs from Wally World for about $7.00 each. I used H4 bulb shims found at the following vendors:

It is also possible to replace the stock bulbs with H-4's without using adapters. If you break off the two outboard tabs from the H-4 bulbs the socket design will still center the bulb on its perimeter and the single vertical tab will orient the bulb in the correct vertical position.

Again, retain the center tab, the vertical one. Break off the two outboard tabs.

The shim also keeps the bulb from being the correct distance from the reflector to project the beam in the right pattern. I haven't used one on the CBR, but that is the main complaint from the VFR people.

You can get the proper standoff by doing the following:

(1) Flatten the upper tab at 12 o-clock with pliers to widen it. The old bulb is a little wider.
(2) Push the two **** at 6 o-clock back flat against the body.
(3) Cut a piece of wire close hanger the width of the body diameter and place it behind the body at 6 o-clock and bend the tabs at 4 o-clock and 7 o-clock back with pliers locking the wire in place.

Insert the bulb like the old one and you will have the proper standoff and full brightness at the coast of a coat hanger.

This is how I do mine.

Or you just live in Europe and use standard H4 without the need to fiddle with adapters and breaking off tabs...

TimBucTwo, thanks a million for the sweet tip! I did what you wrote about last night and got a regular H4 bulb in and working perfectly. No needing to spend the $11-12 for "shims". While they are a good idea at a decent price, for a measly piece of coathanger, your solution works brilliantly, thanks again.
