Default Gearbox?

Hello all of you and thanks for a great forum!

Sorry 4 my bad English but I think that if I use google translation, i will be asking for advice on a combine harvester or similar ..;-)

1:
Gearbox clunk? when I am gearing up from first to second it makes a...hmmm...clunk? (best word i can say to this) and then a little less clunk from second to third..and almoste silent from third to fourth..and the rest gearing/switching is "normal".
is it me that can't handle the bike ?
2:
If i have the bike standing on it's center stand and then have a gear in and moving the rear wheel back and forth there is, to me...too big "neutral gap" (some around a chain-link long, or more) before the gear grips in...!
"Replace chain" mark is not reached yet.
Is this normal behavior?

I'm sorry again for my bad english but hope you understand me in spite of this, if not I'll try to explain better!

Thanks from sweden!

Welcome.

It sounds like your chain is too loose.

How much can you move the chain up and down in the middle ?

There should only be around 30mm of movement.

Hi Swe_man.

Like yours, mine .....'clunks'. I can also roll back & forward a little in 1st gear (bike switched off). I would have thought this normal ?

I'd almost go as far as saying that the gearbox innards on these bikes are from combine harvesters... apart from the odd false neutral they are bullet proof !

Welcome Swe_man.

A bit of clunk is normal. Make sure your clutch is working properly firstly, just to be on the safe side. Also try changing a bit higher up the revs in first and second.

Check your chain play, then your cush drive rubbers in the rear wheel. They might be shot.

Let us know how you go and don't worry about the English either. After a few beers most of us have a fair bit of trouble too...just check out half the posts in the 'Saloon' and you'll see what I mean .

I have clunk going into first ONLY and
if you hold the clutch in for 5 seconds, there's no clunk going into first at all.

Deano and Dave have it again - chain I'd say too

I'd pull the rear wheel off and check the "rubber cushes" too
....... never know sometimes -

check sprockets and chain for wear
and like everyone has said ---correct
chain tension is a must

My literature says 15-25mm of play for the chain, would that be 15mm for one up and 25mm when carrying a passenger?

It should be 15-25mm whatever your load is. If you were going two up touring you'd want to get the bike loaded up with a couple of helpers, then set the chain play.

If it's just a quick ride to the pub every now and then, I wouldn't worry too much. Just set it between the two and put another couple of clicks on the rear shock.

I normally set to about 15mm AT THE TIGHT SPOT* and that way I know its all good.

*Sorry for shouting...I get a bit emotional when I mention tight spots
