Gas prices and gas mileage
Yep! I did it! Thought I would start yet another thread on gas mileage due to the rising prices of fuel. (Plus, I know you guys wont bash me like they will on some other forums Im a member of! LOL)
I filled up this morning and gas is now at $3.39 a gallon. Took $11.00 to fill up!
Anyway, I have been trying to make myself ease off the throttle and break the 40 mpg threshold on the Hurricane, but just cant quite do it. Todays fill up came to 39.9 mpg. Getting close, but just cant get it! Im not going to hypermile extremes though as I have seen some folks do.
Bike is one tooth down in the front and jetted.
I am determined not to be a victim of rising fuel costs! Today it's supposed to rain and I still did not cage to work. Threw the rainsuit in the saddle bag and jumped on the Hurricane.

I run 87 oct. and get 42-44mpg on my daily commute of 42 miles each way. Roads are 60% back roads, 40% interstate. Stock gearing, Dynojet kit, K&N air filter in the stock air box, snorkle extentions on the air box removed, V&H SS2R system, V&H PowerPack ignition box on sport setting, NGK Irridium plugs. And I don't spare the horses when I can get away with it.

bicklebock,
I forgot to mention that when I first rejetted I opened up the the pilot screws 1/4 turn. Don't ask why. I was young(er) and didn't know better. The bike was harder starting when hot, didn't require muck choke if any and milage was horrible, 36-38mpg. The bike was just not as much fun as it should have been. As a result it sat for a few years in the garage. When gas prices spiked a few years ago I HAD to get the beast back on the road.
I went through the carbs. Cleaned the jets. I also reset the pilot screws to the stock setting. What a difference!
Lesson- my driving experience and MPG's are very sensitive to pilot srew settings.
No, I didn't follow the proceedure for setting the pilot screws. I used the standard settings referenced in my US shop manuel which is slightly different than the one posted on this site.
