Well Johnno mate , thanks for the offer man but I'll hold off to try the 93 or better
as I think the Gen 2 units are pretty much all kinda suffering from the same issue -
gets to empty on the gauge and there's still nearly a good two gallons left in there

The problem is with the rheostat, friend Sprock - you need to get the connection point between the arm (which has an electrical contact which shortens the length of the wiring in the rheostat) and the last few winds on the rheostat switch to coincide. That should happen when the float hits the bottom of the tank. It's not easy because of the shape of the tank, which is why I think the slanteyed men at Honda didn't bother, just added a reserve petcock
But if that's all that's wrong with your bike, remember the song
I wanna be happy.................

I believe here in the states, when a vehicle went on reserve the government said that it had to go 50 miles (or somewhere around there). The law was past in 1996. Even though these bikes came out before the law, Honda may have been playing around with those numbers. I agree that when I switch to Res. I still have 1 gal @ 50 mpg to go. I have gone 35 miles on Res. before and was not totally empty. It does seam silly that for a 5.5 gal tank you get scared with 1/5 tank left.

That is probably the reason they don't put gauges on bikes with small tanks. A 3 gal tank would go to Res. with a little less than 1/3 left, assuming the smaller bike got better economy.

yeah well the idea of hauling two backup bottles around on a long trip is a pain in the neck
in any event ...... funny though I just found TwistedThrottle have carrier tubes
for just that purpose that could be mounted under my "stealth" luggage rack

I'm still going with the cheap option which is a 29 dollar Gen 3 unit from E-Bay to see
if it works. The low point and the base level on both these tanks gotta be close

#1 to clear the top of the motor
#2 have same attachment point at the seat

Thinking these two dynamics may say it'll work !

I'll know it when I pull them both I guess
