Default Fuel guage

My fuel gauge is reading all the way to past full even with a half tank. If I disconnect the sending unit then it goes to way past empty.

Sending unit gone bad?

my '88 had a similar problem last year.

took the sender unit out of the tank and took the metal shroud off the unit (it's only held in place with tabs)to expose the guage wire and slider - there was a piece of rusted metal inside that had flaked off and was jamming the slider in various positions.

could be this is happening to yours.

Mark 2 fuel senders are trouble from my observations

I'm thinking of adapting a MK 3 sender for my 1990 MK2 it's so far outta whack !

Are the bottom of the tanks a different shape. That's the thing with bike tanks. I don't believe you can get a good reading with saddles or other odd shapes. The sending unit would be complicated.

Funny thing is, with the sending unit plugged in the needle buries past the full mark, further than it did b4 with a full tank.

If I unplug it the needle bottoms out well below the res mark, lower than when the key is off.

So I rode to work the other day, fuel guage is reading over full, by the time I got to work its reading normal again.
Must be some debris in the tank hanging it up

If the fuel gauge on my 1990 is anything to go by, it's a rough indicator, at best, of how much fuel MIGHT be in the tank.

And that's when it's working 'correctly'!

Well- just order a MK 3 brand spank me new sender for use in my MK2 1990 -

We'll see how this goes soon enough

The MK 3 sender seems to have a longer reach - I dont care if it does not read full when actually
full ( think the mk2 tank is marginally shorter) - what I'm after is the "wind" down as
it's getting low / reserve ...... we'll see
