Default 02 Fuel guage

I just bought a used '02 F4I, there is supposed to be a fuel gauge but it does not come on. I have been told that it only indicates when it is low on fuel. Is this correct? Thanks in advance I scoured the web and found this place. Lots of good information here look forward to spending many nights here reading up.

yeah that's correct. The fuel gauge only comes on when the bike is running low on fuel. Four bars show up and then they start blinking to show that you're running low on fuel

The fuel gauge is actually your reserve gauge. When that thing comes on, get to the gas station soon. I think it gives you like 25 miles or so.

i dunno man. the reserve guage must come on awfully early on my bike then. cause when it goes on ive only used like 3.1 galllons, meaning there is another like 1.5-6 gallons left in the tank. ive personally gone 50 miles with those lights blinking as i was on the highway and there were no exits in sight, scary stuff.

Yeah before I bought my F4i, I thought it was a gas gauge as well & I thought it was the coolest thing in the world.

Then when I got my bike home and started it....I was like, "why isn't the gas gauge showing up??"
I flipped open the owner's manual and found out it's just the fuel reserve gauge.

But, hey, it's still better than no fuel (reserve) gauge at all!

i believe that the reserve ( on an 02) comes on when there is approximately .96 gallons left. meaning that whatever your mileage is, mine is about 40 mpg, that's about how far you can go if you wanna push it, literally.

Yeah I remember reading that too....there's like 0.92 or 0.96 gallons left when the reserve comes on.

Regardless, it's still less than a gallon and you're gonna need gas.
