Engine replacement 750 - 1000cc
Hi to you all
I have a 1988 CBR 750 Hurricane (you know the grey import which no dealer wants to touch and for which parts are scarce, especially in the southern hemisphere)
My motor is shot and will be excessively expensive to repair, I have heard that the 750 / 1000cc motors both fit my frame. I have tracked down a really good 1000 motor which I am thinking of buying. Has anyone gone this route or can confirm that the motors are indeed interchangable???
I have just replaced forkseals, discs, tyres, sprocket and chain prior to theengine problemso everything else is in perfect condition except now I dont have a motor, cant ride and extremely frustrated.
Appreciate if someone could give me advice

I have seen your model of bike come up on ebay in the UK and wondered about them - they seem to have a very good reputation but the parts situation put me off a bit. Anyway, I remembered a good little site I came across which is below - they have quite a few members who may be able to help.

I am originally from Japan. Hurricane 750was the scaled down model of Hurricane 1000 that HONDA tried to fit the Japanese restrictionfor theover 750cc motorcycle manufacturing. Later year (after 90's I believe) HONDA had sold the limited number of Hurricane 1000cc models in Japan with the detuned engine (88 ps). If my memories are not wrong, 750's engine had gear trained cam shaft and 1000's was chained drive. I think only difference is internal mechanism. I don't thihk HONDA created another blue print for 750 version that they could sell only a few hundreds a year. I will try to search some Japanese Web pages and let you know.

i would suggest that you start by finding a honda part number for the 750 frame, and compare it to the 1000 part no. they may be the same identical thing... i agree with yas001 that they wouldnt engineer a new frame for such a limited number of bikes, that is unless you have HRC stamped somewhere on the bike...

Thanks guys, believe the frame is RC27, have also received confirmation that yas001 is correct, it is the same motor only the bore / head is different but it will fit in the frame mountings. If this is so, would the exhaust remain the same (back pressure)and would the carbs have to be rejetted?? Also note that the clutch transfer on the 750 is on the right whilst on the 1000 it is on the left, dont foresee a problem, might just have to change the clutch cable. This looks like a viable option for me,I will be getting some more horses at the same time and have a motor with easily available parts. (Honda might even consider working on it from now on)

if they are available, i would get the carbs and exhaust from the 1000 motor, just in case they are different in some way that might make your bike run poorly...
the cbr750 has a clutch cable? if so, you will be looking for a hydraulic setup for the new eng/trans...

Yip, the 750 does have a cable system!
Don't see too much hasslechanging toa hydraulic setup though, will see if I can secure these with the motor.
I'm running 120 front and 150 rear tyres (cant go larger due to swingarm), are these the same on the earlier 1000 models?

the hydraulic sys should be pretty easy to fit... i would just get as many parts from the donor bike that i could. even if you think you wont need it...
as for the swingarm. if the frames are the same, i would bet the swingers are too... i have an 88 running a 190 rear on the stock arm (check my gallery) but you will need to put on a 1990 or newer rear rim.
