my bike has a 97 motor and was originally a 96. The only thing is though that mine has the pickup and stator from the old motor, otherwise I doubt the wiring will be plug and play, if you still have those parts you should be fine, I'm on my 96 brain box with no problems, it tops out higher than the old motor, so everything seems in order.

I would do a few things before just buying another engine. Are you using new plugs? What about the carbs, was all the fuel drained from the carbs before setting them on the shelf? Are the plugs wet after trying to start?
I would do a compression test and a leak down test. From these results, it'll tell you whats wrong with the engine if anything. If the engine passes those two tests, then I would move onto ignition and fuel tests. You can test a majority if the ignition system (pulse generator, TP Sensor, Tip Over Sensor, etc) with a multimeter and the fuel pump can be done by hooking it up directly to the battery and test the volume for 10 seconds.
If you go through this, post the results and we can direct you were to go from there.
