Default Engine Life question

Hi All Im reentering the 2 wheel world after a long absence.
Most if not all the reviews and posts are very positive and I like what I see (ride tomorrow)however Iwould like some info on the 1990 1000F
The bike has 48klms on the clock but I believe it has been around once due to V-check( understandable at 18 years)
what sort of engine life have people got out of these bikes before rebuild and what sort of money and how often is a rebuild necessary?

Default RE: Engine Life question

Hi and welcome ! I've had a 1990 Hurricane for the last 4 years, currently 38000 miles up. It's not neccessarily true that the bike you are considering has gone "around the clock" - I bought mine, aged 14 years with a genuine mileage of 10031 !
As to engine life, I've heard of Hurricanes having done 127000 MILES without a rebuild, just the occasional cam chain and general regular maintenance, although I'm no authority on the subject, there are many others on the forum more qualified to comment......
There are however things to look out for
Rattle at startup which goes away after a mile or two, which means the camchain could do with replacement. Not expensive, can be done with a bit of mechanical knowledge. Chain about $60 US. Labour cost unknown, doing it myself with help......
Clicking from front forks under braking - replace steering head bearings, again not too expensive, just time consuming. Broken speedo splastic nut, annoying but cheap. Easy to repair.
They are inclined to gobble the occasional regulator, as you will note from recent posts. Can be costly if you let your battery water run short, fries reg and stator.....been there, done that....
An engine rebuild can be expensive, depending on whether something broke in the internals while riding, or whether you're starting the rebuild with just worn components. From my own limited experience, they don't break very often unless thoroughly abused, in which case the owner should be ashamed !! You will see the forum members are VERY proud of their bikes !!
Works manual is available on the Forum, as is much better and more comprehensive knowledge than I can offer. Ask for help and you will receive.
Cheers

Default RE: Engine Life question

I met a guy at the Motogp in October with a 1990 model with 300,000k on the clock. (190,000 miles?)
Engine had never been out of the bike with just the usual wear and tear replacements, he replaced all the fairings 2 years ago after a minor off so the bike looked brand new, and he said he rode it petty hard. Bought it off his dad 10 years ago.
