My 1991 CBR-F
I have a 91 CBR-F. Had some carb gunk and some vacuum leaks. Fixed them and now that thing runs like a raped Ape! All bikes have maintenance issues and cam chains are a maintenance issue. Keep your bike up and you will have a great bike in a 91 CBR. I have had over 30 motorcycles in my riding career (had a 74 CB 750) and the CBR is one of my favorites of all.
I don't know where you live, but here is a nice 1988 CBR on Craig's List in San Francisco, CA area. Take a look.

Don't LOOK for issues! You WILL find them! If you don't have the mechanical clout, get someone who does to look over the bike for you. My boss recently bought a shiney 1990 1F but it turned out to be a bit of a lemon because it simply had not been maintained. I always look for a good service record (not just the stamps in the book cos they can be meaningless).
Some have noisy cam chains. Most don't. It's a small issue. Most of the other issues are small (keep the battery topped up and charged) and I'm sure Shadow will be along soon offering advice about regulator/rectifiers!
Good luck.

The key here is maintenance - a well cared for bike will run as well as it looks.
All the above comments are true.
Ride the bike, and if it feels good, take her home and love her, just like we do.
If like most girls, she has the odd "issue" - we'll help you straighten her out......
It's what we do.

Lo m8, you've come to the right place to ask.
I'm no great mechanic but will give you what I've learnt over the last few months about the cbr 1000.
Basic things to look for that will cost you decent amounts of money to replace if they haven't been maintained like the final drive chain. Over excessive play or lack of lubrication may mean a replacement there. Check the the ware on the brake disk pads and the disks too. If the bike aint been used much check for age damage on the tyres, the tread might be ok but the walls might not.
If the mileage is high say 40,000mls and above the alternator damper/starter clutch might start needing attention (I know that well, lol. See posts). The cam chain as mentioned might rattle from cold but most go quite after warming up and getting oil around the engine.
anyhow, if you decide to go for it you won't be disappointed as the old girls are still one of the best bikes you could have.
Last, but not least, listen to what the rest of the guys here say. Their knowledge is from owning the cbr's for years.....
