Default Clunking when idling

Hey I Am new to bikes I have 88 cane 1000 when it idles it makes a clunking noise especially when it it just starts up also when I ride in 1st and 2nd at low rpms its like it wants to shut off on me, its almost like it is gasping once I open the throttle and go up to speed like 35 mph and up it performs ok any ideas?

not sure.. it COULD be the cam chain tensioner... , maybe the balancer gear backlash? I'm sure someone else around here will know more than me.. possibly even outof sych carbs (for the rough running, not the clunking)

hi, i had same noise, turned out to b alternater drive chain, does it stop if u blip throttle? mine stoped after 2500r pm . good luck ......................kevvydude

This clunking noise is it just one clunk or does it go on for a while?

At what revs are you having the other problem?

Does it have standard pipes?

How many k's has it done?
