Default Choke Sticking.

Hello all,

The choke is sticking on my '95. It goes to full choke, but won't return to no choke unless I lift the tank and force it (even though the cable goes slack). The return spring seems okay. Is there a quick fix, or do I need the carbs rebuilt?

Thanks for any help. :-)

I don't think you'll need the carbs rebuilt.

The cable is going slack which points to the choke mechanism on the carbs sticking, or a broken return spring. Just a small amount of mechanical common sense should be able to sort this out. Try some wd40 to remove any dirt, followed by some oil or grease to lubricate the offending area. Work the choke mechanism back and forth until it moves freely.

Thanks, Steve,

I should have mentioned that I did put some 3-in-1 oil on the plungers on the carbs (couldn't find the WD-40 in the garage) and worked it for a bit. It may have been a little better, but I can't say for sure. I'll keep at it.

Check the condition of the little plastic bushings the choke actuator slides on. If they are missing or broken they may cause the choke to stick.

There are5 Springs that control theChoke. Each Carb has a rempvable plungerwith a spring that can be removed and cleaned out. Then attached to the choke slide itself is another spring. This spring is needed as well to act as a return spring. If fitted incorectly it can jam.

Failing that my cable is wornrightwhere it crosses the frame at the front of the fuel tank. as if its routed incorrect the tank sits on the cable. Also make sure the cable isnt stretched.

I would remove the cable from the carb and see if there is free movement.

Then clean each choke plunger oneach carb. Then finally make sure the return spring on the slide is correctly fitted.

Also the choke slide is secured to the carbsvia 2 screws with special washers which allow the slide to move, while still securing it. If these are mounted skew wiff or upside down the slide wont move.

Had this same problem on my 95 it was just the slide bar that attaches to the chokes, was bent a little bit, not much at all but enough to make it stick. May want to look into that.
