Chargeing problem??
I have been chasing a "low charge" condition for a while and am getting a bit tired of it. I replaced the voltage regulator with an "improved one" with a big heat sink, replaced the new YUASA with anew gel cell, replaced all of the connectors at the alternator lead and atthe regulator. Replaced the main relay, re ran extra ground cables to the engine and the volt reg. but it only charges to 12.57V @ 3000 rpm plus, no more. No charge at idle at all, it begins to charge at about 1500 and reaches 12v @ 2000 the slooooly goes up to 12.57 @ 5000. Also I have battery voltage to the ign switch (also new) until it is turned on then it drops to 11.4 (engine off) but the battery voltage is still over 12v (if charged) measured at the battery. What gives, or is this "normal"?? Hiway use it is ok but in town after a few days I have to put on the 2amp charges for a couple of hours as the static battery voltage is down to 11.4v.

Here is a linky to a charging systemdiagnostic guide

Are you 100 % sure the voltmeter reads OK?
Have you measured that the AC voltage from the alternator is 40 V minimum over all three phases?

Here's one that's a little more hands-on:

You'll have to find out what values apply to you (e.g. max drainage leakage current)

RE: Chargeing problem??
thank you for the link to the chart it is better than the one in the honda service Manual. I have not checked the output from the three phases as it was not listed in the honda book but I will. What does the white and black wires that go to the alternator do? The haynes book says it is to a field coil in the alt. but that is not how this type of alternator is controlled. The honda manual calls it a voltage feedback wire???
