Default Change frontsprocket or rear?..gear ratio

Hello!

I need to change my chain and sprockets and would like to take the chance and lowering the rpm on highway cruses..
So my question..
I open up to the front sprocket and it seams tight..
Can I realy fit in one toth extra in the front?

Or should I go for less at the rear instead?

Pros and Cons for changing??

Can I take almost any Ebay kit? or s there some traps I need to watchout for?

Tanks!

I think some guys use this site :-

Gearing Commander: Motorcycle Speed, RPM, Chain & Sprockets Calculator

Personally I would be inclined to go down on the back, just my 2c though.

Maybe drop Sprock a PM, he's the gearing wizard in the Hurricane section.

What year is the bike? 2nd &3rd gen bikes have speedometer driven off final drive, so changing sprocket ratios will effect speed readout.

Tanks!!

It is a -95 so yes the Speedo works from the front sprocket rpm.......and change in ratio will change what I see on the meter...hhhmmm might not be that nice if it starts to show 15-20% off... That might cost me alot :-)

Maybe I should keep original ratio...
its just that I ride 60km to work (one way) and most of it is in crusing speed of 100 km/h giving me a rpm of just short of 4000.
Cuting that to somewhere 3000 would help on the fuleconsumption and noice At least that was my original taught..

The 89 onward bikes all over read about 10% on the speedo anyway. This would equate to going down 3 teeth on the rear sprocket, (to 39) or going up on on the front (from 17)to 18 which can be done if you're willing to do some work as the standard clearances are just a little tight. Your speedo will then be 100% accurate.
I'd suggest changing the rear sprocket.

Here's a link to an ebay U.S. vendor that will do kits in stock or custom ratios. That way you'll be sure to get the proper chain length

RK x Ring Honda '87 92 CBR1000F Hurricane Chain and Sprockets Kit OEM or Custom | eBay

This isn't for your application but I'll call them for you if you need them

an 18 on the front will require grinding the chain divider to the rear of the sprocket
adding more teeth to the rear will require a longer chain and inversely small sprockets
may require a shorter or shortening of the chain.

As for ratios well that's just personal preference depending on what you are after

Acceleration or Low RPM cruising

Less teeth on the front and more teeth on the rear gives you greater acceleration but higher
rpm cruising. (may need longer chain depending on tooth count)

an 18 on the front and less teeth on the rear gives you less acceleration but lower rpm
cruising speed (may need to shorten chain depending on tooth count)
