Dean you must have misread my first message. The procedure to set pilots starts with doing a vacuum balance of the carbs. My point is just that balancing the carbs will not cure the idle problem. The second step of doing the pilot setting should. If it doesn't I provided a check list of a few other things to check.

Funny thing that David - I have great success in doing exactly the opposite

Set the needles first then Sync - otherwise if you sync then change the needles it will move out of sync once more

Maybe like Dean0 I'm just misreading things too eh ?

I find it easier to sync then set pilots, its the way I was taught. If you want to be 100% leave the gauges hooked up and check sync again afterward. To each his own, this is what works for me.
