cam chain question
I've had my 1994 for a few months now. It's got about 56,000 km on her. She runs great except the cam chain rattles away like an old sewing machine. At 2,000 rpm you can really hear it rattling. At 1,000 the noise is a bit intermittant. Above 3 or 4,000 the engine loud enough to mask it. The noise does not go away when she is warmed up.
I bought it used from a bike shop. The owner imports containers of bikes from Italy and also sells new Ducs. After I had the bike for a couple of month I brought it in to have the cam chain replaced, he gives a 6 month warranty on his used bikes. After he took the engine apart and found out that there was no adjustment he could do, he just put it back together and told me it would last for at least another year.
I don't put on much milegage, 100 miles per week about my max. How much time do I have to get this changed or I'm I correct in thinking it's better to take care of it asap before I run into larger problems. Also, what's the cost having it done?
Thanks guys,
Scott

RE: cam chain question
Easy job, I just replaced mine four weeks ago while I was checking the valve clearance. Pull the tank and remove the valve cover and the intake camshaft. The tensioner sits right there. Don't drop anything in the engine or you will be pulling the lower case off as I did. (I put my glasses on and found the nut up top after pulling the bike all apart. Ha Ha Ha...)
I also have a '94. It cost me $113.50 US with shipping. The link below has them cheaper.
There are many links in the forum addressing the tensioner.
