First- My 95 has linked brakes (as do, I believe, many Gold Wings, VFR's and Blackbirds) and I don't have a problem with them. Most of the time you just use your brakes as you normally would without noticing anything different.
Second- Linked brakes makes it harder to lock up your brakes by forcing a balance between front and rear.
Third- Your 87 doesn't have linked brakes, so don't sweat it.

I bought a 94 1000F in 1999 with the linked brakes. I went from a 750F which I bought new in 1980. I rode the 1KF for 5/6 yrs. Never had a problem with the brakes. Saved my *** more than once. Linking's probably not necessary for experienced riders and system does add weight to the already heavy 600 pounder.
The first gen Hurricanes didn't have a linked brake system. That came when the face lift happened. It's very easy to check, just follow the brake lines from the reservoir to the calipers. You will not find any connection between the front system and the rear system.
Well they had to sell the left overs to someone and since, us North Americans, seem to be lagging in pretty much everything (electronics, vehicles, etc.) so they probably decided to sell the NOS (new old stock, aka left overs) here.
What's out there besides USA and Canada anyways???
*It's a joke, just in case.
Yes, correct. 1989 was the first year of the 2:nd gen 1KF in the REAL WORLD, and North American market had to wait until -90.
1987-1988: 1:st gen standard brakes and narrow rear tire/wheel.
1989-1992: 2:nd gen big facelift, standard brakes and wider rear wheel (170), cartridge fork.
1993-2000: Facelift, combined brakes, different carbs.
In North American market, the 1Kf was discontinued in 1996, to be replaced by the SuperBlackbird in 1997. In the rest of the world, it coexcisted side by side with the 1100XX for some years, in Sweden even until 2000, and the colourschemes changed to, so this was not a "leftover-sell".
