Anyone ever try the V&H SSR-2 w/out jetting?

You could always do it in stages. See if you can tune the bike to the SS2R's. I read on a thread here by R1000, (a very hands on rider)that the existing needles could be shimmed to open them up.
When I first got my bike, it had the orig. 4to2 header witha set of Cobra slip-on glass paks. The sound was too loud for me but the power band was fine. As far as I could tell, it had orig. needles. (The member I sold them to installed them without needle change and is delighted with them)
I switched out to the V&H S-Sport 4to1 and Stage 1 Dynojet needles, a full tune and CarbSync. Nice aggressive tone, but the annoying 5K rpm flat spot started.
I also noticed that the fuel milage suffered noticably, (open the gate and more fuel pours in, right?)
Not sure how critical all that is to you. Just something to think about.
