Ok, so finally found the cash to buy the necessary parts.
Bought both starter clutch and the alternator damper (and the bearings)
hopefully I've ordered the right ones as the site had 4 or 5 references to both the damper and the clutch
will keep you posted!

As mentioned elsewhere, the damper is discontinued by Honda-bugger! So now faced with disassembly, shuffling of a plates and addition of a 1-2mm washer to create more friction. There has been some thought that a MkII might fit. Any thoughts?
Parts have arrived. Three bearings and the starter clutch. The part that arrived was 28125-MS2-613
I am unconvinced that this is the part I ordered but looking it up on the Partzilla.com site shows it common across all bikes from 87 to 96.
Looking at old v new
I was initially doubtful that this is the right part but i suspect that it has simply been improved. the spline and bearing housing look identical. still in packet though. anyone done this job and found this to be the case.
So now need to disassemble the Damper and start to place the jigsaw together again!

G'day Owen,
I got your mail and sorry I haven't replied, that is not my work computer and rarely gets switched on these days as I've been travelling for work over the last few weeks with a work supplied notebook and tablet.
I know Shadow has rebuilt his alternator damper as did Stu in his How To. Sprocks probably done one as well as he knows every part of the CBR1000F on a first name basis
I seem to recall the plates have to go in with the 'dish' a certain way. Just think of a motorcycle clutch and the damper provides essentially the same service.

Gents - appreciate the thoughts. Am reading the damper rebuild next!
Seb - if you do have any time to measure the MkII damper that would be awesome.
Am following Stu's thread although i like Seb's modifications. (I have a coat hanger for a spoke substitute) I am going to photo journal my own rebuild as well to hopefully add to the pool.
Either of you replaced the starter clutch and found the new one to have the smaller external diameter you see in the photo?
Day off tomorrow, so hoping to get started and maybe get the mechanic to bench press the bearing in to the housing (He's a strong lad!)

Here are the measurements Owen - for the Mark 2 CBR1000F Alternator Damper- with pictures to save a heap of trying to explain
The total length is 55mm
Length of the plate housing is 31mm
Width of the plate housing is 50mm
Inner splined end is 26.8mm
Other end near cog 29.8mm
Cog teeth of which there are 21 are 39.8 mm across
