RE: 87 Hurricane Valve Clearances and....
I don't know of many CBR1000F 's that don't have some noise when the revs are real low ..
The balancer shaft if she has excess slack in it will tend to rattle ..
Like I said before , I am not to sure if the alternator chain will rattle because I have never experience that myself nor had anyone tell of an issue with those chains as yet ..
May I ask exactly what you mean when you say it rattles when you hit the starter ?

mine has a rattle when you hit the starter or at low idle and it sounds like its coming from the area of the alt chain

The noise is there as you crank the bike & continues after start up while revs are low. This is a hellish rattle as opposed to the chaffcutter noise from the cam chain. I also have a loud clack as the starter clutch kicks in.
As far as liquidskate7 goes, if you have a ticking noise as opposed to a rattle/rubbing noise, then adjust the tappets. Hey,once you have removed thecam coveryou may as well do it. Note: You may need special tools as Honda has managed to make a simple job hard to accomplish. I recall welding a 10mm socket to a 10mm ring /oe spanner bent @ 30 deg's or there abouts. Someone else may be able to shed light on the required tools, it's been around 10 yrs since I did my previous one.
