It's the plates that wear inside the starter clutch, Gill.As far as I can remember, Kaska pulled his out without having to split the casings. He did a how to on it as well...........I think Ara just wanted a new engine ! he he
Mine's done 67000 K's now, so crossed fingers !

Nah, honestly if I could have gotten that Biatch of a thing out I would have! I have tried to get the starter clutch out of my benched engine, and it cannot be done without splitting the case. Maybe the older engines could be done that way, and I know the 600's are OK, but you can get so far in, and no further. Bit of a mare really! But.....If the engine doesnt sound like its struggling to turn over, you are probably OK. It sounds like a struggling starter motor, best I can describe it.

The one I'm looking at is in Waterford, the guy lives off of Andersonville Rd and the bike has been repainted bright blue like the Yamaha's. Can I Ask, are you chasing the one in Lake Orion? If not is it in decent shape andwhat kind of money? Not trying to step on your toes, but if your not looking at it I might be interested if the one I'm chasing falls through. No worries either way, like I saidin myearlier post I wasn't really looking for another bikein the first place so if I don'tget one I'm notsweating it. If this one doesn't work out I would only really look at another one if it was a good deal.

I have a 91, so I gather not much has altered. Being a newbie into bike mechanics, the Cane is a really good bike to start. The manual is actually really helpful and whatever hole there is - can be filled with a How-To off this site. My manual is now complimented with "how-to's" stuck into the relevant section.
I bought my Cane second hand, at $3800 Australian (cheaper your way by the sounds), 33000 kms and new mufflers but not fitted. Immediately I had new needle and seats, tyres and I replaced ALL fluid - fluidis cheap so just do it.
The one thing I did look for is smoke. Rev it and if its burning oil....it requires some internal attention - if that happened at 33000, I would have bought a different bike.
