I did mine with no problems, but defiantly solder the wires..

 

I would check your stator/armature to make sure that is isn't shorted out. Also if your chassis ground is weak or inadequate it will cause overheating problems as will poor wiring comnections because of the change of electrical impedence of the system, making the regulator work much harder than it has to
