Default safety wire help

I was putting safety wire on the front axle of my 06 1Krr and on the one side the axle does not stick out far enough to run the safety wire through. I can see holes in the axle, however I would have to drill through the bottom of the fork to use that hole. Drilling through there does not seem like a good idea. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

That hole isn't there for safety wire, it's there for the factory tool to hold/orient the axle. You safety wire a nut to stop it from unscrewing; the axle and axle nut are prevented by the fork clamp nuts. Those are what you should be safety wiring, if anything. You can drill those and wire them to each other in pairs.

And put your sidestand up before you drop the bike off that stand and knock it over on the right side.

Update: Here's a nice link on wiring caliper and pinch bolts. In this case, the axle nut is a positive nut and available for wiring. In many bikes this is an internal nut and there's nothing to wire to, per my original post.

you can always get the motovation axle sliders. they will serve two purposes.

one will be added crash protection for the front.
the other will be that they have a rod that runs through the front axle and bolts the sliders together. i loctite the crap out of my axle slider bolts and since they fit snugly over the axle nut there is no way that the axle nut will ever back out.

if you really want to safety wire it, drill a hole through the axle nut on the right side of the axle and only wire that part.

some of the other bikes (RC51 i believe) had that hole you were referring to sticking out once everything was torqued and made a nice anchor point for safety wire. these it doesnt work so well.

let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks guys! I was thinking the safety wire tie off to the axle on that side was manditory not convienent.

KeS My two year old loves to flick the kickstand up and down. It has been common practice for me to check that before I put the bike back on the tires. At least by the time he is big enough for a 50 he will know how to change his own oil.

Thanks again.

Here is how it turned out. I put a small hole in the lower bracket that holds the fender to the shock.
