Default starting clutch issue?????

Hello guys...I couldn't find a thread on this and need help. My 87 1000 started making a grinding noise while trying to start her. Sometimes it starts and other times it just makes that weird noise. It happened at work so I had to ride her home for about 10min and then it was making another noise while running which was more like a "bell" sound or something loose inside the engine. She runs fine other than that sound. I haven't started her up 'cause I don't want to mess her up. So I have a theory that it might be the starting clutch that gave out. I have another spare parts engine that had a bad crank so I plan on replacing the starting clutch with that one. How do I really check to see if the other one is good? Should I just buy a new one? My other issue is with the charging system still. She would charge fine sometimes and then she would just not charge at all and will drain my 14BS battery within about a week depending on how much I use her. That might be the regulator/rectifier?. Please guys, any help will be greatfully welcomed. Thanks in advanced and hope to hear from you guys soon...

Thanks for the reply hawkwind. I had looked at that video but my bike does a different sound... It's more of a "crack" sound... You know when the chain jumps or so? That's the sound it made when she didn't want to start, like if the starting clutch chain was catching? After she starts she make a "sounding bell" sound pretty loud out front. Something is definitly loose in there but won't know for sure 'till I get the engime out and appart. This sucks... She was running perfect except for the regulator/rectifier issue. Maybe it was caused by the push starting her in second so many times and the starting clutch gave out? Just don't know. I need my bike running again since it's my only vehicle, I'm hitching a ride with the wife, and have to move out of this house by the end of the month. I'll be taking the bike to my friend's house to perform the work and see what's her issue. I have a spare starting clutch from the broken engine I was given in the deal but need to see if it's good. Thanks for the reply and if you have any more ideas they will be welcomed!!!!!....

I think the tensioner pawl for the chain is the issue

See this old thread from Bluebeard

Hello guys. I finally fixed the problem so I will be closing this thread. The problem was that the nut for the alternator came loose!!! I opened up the motor, checked everything, and re installed the nut torqued at 65ft/lbs as the service manual says. Bell sound no longer there and she seems to be charging fine. The regulator is also doing it's job so far but I think I'm going to replace it anyway. So that was my whole issue. I thank all of you guys that came to my rescue!!!!!!!
