Default 1987 cbr600 getting it running.

Hello all!

I today, purchased a 87 hurricane and I am looking for advice to get it running.

Overall it looks in good condition, the wheels have been removed, along with the tank and fairings, but all appears to be there.

I was planning to change the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, and coolant and then see if it turns over. If it does I was going to chuck some fuel in and see if it fires.

Its been sat for 5 years, so while its got all the parts removed is there anything else I should do/check.

Many thanks in advance.

It's very likely that you'll have to strip and thoroughly clean the carbs.

Also, check the age and condition of the tyres.

Best of luck with the refurb, any chance of some photos whilst you're at it :-)

Hi, i will grab some pictures when i can! in relation to the carbs i was told when the previous owner brought it in, he turned the fuel off and let it run until it cut out, so im hoping the carbs arnt too bad. are there any manuals for cleaning the carbs?

Someone with foresight, you might be lucky. The best manuals on carb cleaning would be on YouTube or I recall one on this site but cannot remember who posted it.

There's a guy on YouTube, mrmaxstorey. He has tons of videos on all things small-engine related.
is the link to the 1st of 3 videos on cleaning motorcycle carbs. They're not specific to your model. However, they are incredibly informative on explaining the process and the basics of multi-carb systems.
If you apply this video, a model-specific service manual, and a whole lot of patience, you should be good.

One often overlooked area to service is the fork tubes and the oil therein. Also, new brake fluid is in order, I would imagine.

Argh, the forks!

I really should have spotted that as it caught me out when I was refurbing my CBR - MOT failure and the most revolting gunk to ever call itself oil when they were stripped down.
