This summer I realized how usefull a lap timer must be. Does anyone have any recommendations? What excactly do I need. Most track days I attend some one shows up with a "beacon".

Best one I've used is the AIM Sports lap timer. Large display which is easy to read when you're tucked behind the bubble. Just takes a few strips of velcro to mount on the bike. Get the beacon, you don't want to get caught at the track w/o having one if no one else brings one.

BTW, here's the link... http://www.aimsports.com/products/tg/index.html

I've used a couple in recent years (including the Aim unit) and my personal favorite is the hands down the XT racing Ultra Lap timer http://www.cc-2000.com/xtracing/en/ultra-lap/index.html
But I haven't tried the new Starline stealth Lap Timer yet - Looks to be nice. http://www.starlane.com/en_stealth_automatic_chrono.htm
