By strictly technical terms - it's not a Blackbird. Blackbird was the designation of the SR-71. The plane on the deck of the Intrepid is an A-12 Oxcart that was developed for recon missions for the CIA. It was the plane that Lockheed evolved into the SR-71 for the Air Force. The A-12 is older, and was lighter and while top speed is still classified, many say it was a bit faster than the SR-71 due to it being a touch shorter and anout 7,000 lbs lighter at takeoff weight.
The Intrepid museum even incorrectly describes the plane as an A-12 Blackbird on their website.
