I think it was because of tire wear. They would have red flagged for rain because the back up bikes couldn't have wet tires on them.

Michelin pulled both tires, ran an intermediate, and then decided that even that wasn't good enough, so mandatory pits.
IIRC, the same situation happened at Phillip Island last year, or maybe the year prior, causing Marc to DQ because he went one lap further on his initial set of tires than was allowed.
I was really surprised by how dirty the track was.... I can't help bit think that was partly responsible for the extra tire wear, which is a shame as Rio Hondo seems like such a nice layout... I hope they get more use put of it than solely GP

but they did... Laps 9-11 haha. Michelin just didn't want to risk another "explosion" happening with VR or JLo riding on their tyre. Could you imagine the insurance pay-out if one of the riders was injured because of a malfunctioning tyre?

Not to mention the PR nightmare. If it was a bad enough tire failure, it could kill the company. I read some comments on FB articles and I could t believe how many "I guess I should return my Michelin Pilot Power Roads etc...." comments there were.
