Default Seat spacing/distance between your passenger and yourself

So myself and my girlfriend are a thinner fit couple I’m 6’0” 175, she is 5’7” 110’ish and the distance between us is awkwardly large when we are both seated in our riding positions. I like to hug the tank and it seems to create a large gap between us, i tried scooting back a bit and that just makes it super uncomfortable so we usually pack my backpack with a blanket to help fill that void. Any advise what we can do, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I wish my instructor had the patience to explain this to me instead of shouting at me for being scared to proceed between a parked car and an oncoming car!!!

My girlfriend and I also have this problem, but it seems that she is starting to get used to how she needs to sit so that I can be comfortable during the trip
