If you don't care if it's DOT approved why bother wearing a helmet?

enough said by everyone else? i dont think so.....its bulky cause its a helmet...what do you want a do-rag? if you dont care about approval ratings......then dont wear a helmet, you have made it very clear you dont want protection while riding.

thanx for the advice everybody.. found a small-size atv helmet that can be used for motorcycle riding thats been ordered.. plan on trimming the liner/foam if its too tight but atleast it will be alot lighter and feel better than the other helmets out there..

and som ppl mentioned about not riding with a helmet, we have a helmet law out here and its not like the country where it would be okay.. theres no choice but to wear one here in md unless u want to get fined.. but when i was in oahu, wore my first and only helmet once and it was too dam hot and felt like suffocating.. so didnt wear it after that and felt great.. but yea, theres no better feeling on a hot days night than red-lining and having the wind rush through u, now being relocated in a helmet law state cant do that anymore.. to each their own..

oh well, thanx for the replies

More power to you bro! Hope your head never bounces.

As far as "having wind rush through u", no thanks. Sometimes I'll be riding and I'll hit a beetle in the faceshield, or some other large insect, and it will make a loud popping noise and splatter. You can feel the impact. Now imagine how it would feel hitting your face while doing 70+mph. I bet the pain would make you **** yourself! I love having a helmet and faceshield protecting me. I also love making it home to see my wife and kids.

Your helmet should be replaced or tested if dropped more that 2 - 2.5 feet to a hard surface and should be replaced every three or four years cause the **** inside will compress or deteriorate. It will deteriorate faster if you have a habit of keeping your helmet over your gas cap on your tank too. And it will compress faster if you have a habit of resting your lid on a post or mirror. Shaving the foam is dumb, because you are reducing the effectiveness of your protection.

[sm=oopssign.gif] didn't realize you had a helmet law my bad. Helmet laws suck though I do think you should where one, but I don't think it should be up to the state to tell you what you can or can't do if you are at least 18 years of age. I hate that sh#t like telling you that you have to wear a seat belt. I'm old enough to make my oiwn decisions. If I choose to not to wear a seatbelt and die thats my problem.

texas law states you must wear a helmet unless you are 21 and have a minimal of $10,000 life insurance. im sure you can find a helmet that fits you, but trimming the lining isn't your best option.

Yea, shaving the padding is not a wise decision... you might as well wrap your head with a roll of toilet paper and put on a salad bowl. But hey, it's your melon and your life.

As far as states telling you that you have to wear a helmet or a seat belt - well you don't HAVE to if you don't want to. You just better be prepared to get fined when you get caught. And besides, I believe it's more of an insurance cost thing. The more safety measures you take (i.e. wear helmet, seat belt, have air bags, anti-lock brakes, security/alarm sytem, etc.) the more likely you are to get a better insurance rate. And that's not just on an individual basis - it's state wide. I remember when Michigan came out with a seat belt law (before it was nation wide), we had some of the lowest insurance rates in the country because of it. But now belt laws are across the board so they're finding other reasons to hike insurance costs - like helmet laws.

Just my $0.02 that may be better suited for another thread! Sorry.
