Default leather or textile jackets?

im loooking to get a jacket, but im kinda hung up on either leather or textile. obviously leather warmer, and textile cooler, but do both offer the same protection? i was looking to buy one of alpinestars jackets, it was textile but had pads in the shoulders and elbows. im not looking for something that will hold up to 150 mph, just something that will give protection for street and freeway driving. is leather overboard for this, plus its freakin expensive. and if u guys have an opinions on what jackets to look for i would appreicate it. thanks

well on 911 my friend was involved in a very serious accident..WE were riding on our usual backroads and he took off around the curve prolly around 130ish and he hit a dear coming out of the curve on the straight after he had hammered it prolly hit the deer at 150ish we are guessing...he was wearing my ICON TEAM MERC jacket textile...AS of now I SWEAR by this jacket!!!!! HE flew 100+ feet along the highway winding up in a person back yard...the jacket held up like a champ...actually one hole where the bucks horn went through his jacket...but as far as rash..it held up like leather....when we came around the corner all we saw was bike peices..and we were like oh ****....there was blood everwhere from the deer....he was bleeding fron his knees and was knocked out....all his injuries were internal....when the medics got there he stopped breathing.....they took the jacket off and they said holly ****..it saved his life....give what his bike and the deer looked like....so today i bought the same jacket..and i will always wear it..ebay works wanders....they had to care flight him to tyler tx...we is doing fine as far as what hes been through...he is expected to make a full recovery...god thank icon.....i sure will....dave

for protection, leather all the way. the only textile that can compare with leather is the aerostich suit.
yes leather is warmer but they do come with vents, perforation, etc.

as far as the guy with the textile...well, for one thing, with leather, the horns most likely wouldn't have gone through the leather. as far as slide, sounds to me he was just launched and didn't do much sliding, in which case, either one would suffice.

just remember that the jackets only save you from losing skin and maybe having your limbs come apart. what we are most prone to is impact...so make sure you wear some armor as well.

my advice is leather all the way.

I got one of each -- both by AGV. Both have armor in critical spots. Probably get the most use out of the leather one -- but when it's the dawg days of August the mesh is a lifesaver.

I also have both. I get the leather one out in the early season or fall when it cools down. Or them chilly days. I like the leather one better just because it looks alot better and doesn't flap in the wind as bad when doing 100+. If you are going to buy a jacket buy it on EBAY. Leather or textile. You can not beat the price. You can get $600 leather jackets for $350 and under.

The jacket isn't too expensive either. I'm going to look into this jacket for summer riding.

Get one of each, IMO. I only use my textile when it's 90 or above and I don't plan on doing a lot of "messing around". Otherwise I'm all leather.

both times that i have gone down (40mph and 70mph), i was wearing leather. no rips or tears whatsoever. i swear by it, in all weather. sweat wipes off but road rash is forever.

and dont forget about your hands. first wreck was with some fox motorcross gloves on and my hands turned to hamburger. the faster wreck was with alpinestars leather full-length gloves. two broken fingers and sprained wrist from the impact but no rash.

I just ordered 2 jackets:

1. Icon Motorhead Leather Jacket (finally in the right size I hope...I got an XL that came with the bike, then I purchased a brand new one in Large, but that's too big, so now I just ordered a Medium. If anyone is looking for a large, let me know. $199 + shipping).

2. Icon Team Merc Jacket
