Default Boot Sizing

Hey, I'm looking at getting my first pair of motorcycle boots. I'm liking the 2010 alpinestars s-mx plus boots. How do these compare with other boots? They come in either vented or not vented. What would be better to get? I wear a size 10-1/2 shoe, so what would be the best size of boot to get? Is it better to get the same exact size or 1/2 size bigger? I'm not gonna be doing any stunts or anything. Just cruisin around town and back and forth to work.

Thanks for the advice!

I can't speak to those boots, but I usually get my motorcycle boots in the same size shoe that I wear. A half size smaller is OK too, since leather will stretch with use and I want my boots generally snug.

You could check webbikeworld.com / motorcyclegear.com / Google for reviews and thoughts on sizing for those particular boots?

Race boots *won't* stretch like touring boots. Do NOT get smaller than the size needed. They are designed for exacting fit w/ toe & heel protection.

You want to go to a shop that has a proper foot measuring/sizing device. Stand up while measuring to get true sizing. Then try on the boots to check for fit & purchase accordingly.

Ah, there it is then. Pay no attention to my race boot noob ways I Googled the boot style and it looked like a regular touring boot to me, so I just went with that.

Either way, the advice about trying boots on locally is clutch. Even the same size has been pretty different between brands for me.

I have the S-MX 5 in a size 12, and I usually wear a 12, 12.5 or a 13, depending on the brand of shoe/boot. The boots fit perfectly, even over my big calves.

I got my boots (I guess you could call them touring boots. They only differ from the racing boots because the racing boots have sliders and aren't water proof.. They look exactly alike besides those two points) in the same size that I would usually buy shoes in. My boots hurt like **** until I broke them in. They are so comfortable now that I can walk in them for a bit. (They did stretch a bit but mostly the leather shaped to my feet)

Depending where you live and the conditions you ride in you might want to get the ventilated version. Mine are waterproof (to ride every day, all year round) and don't breath too well. Not that it's getting warmer I would have liked to have some nicely ventilated ones.

When I go to a dedicated shoe store and have my foot measured, it comes out as size 11, though it's between 10 1/2 and 11. With good shoes made for American feet, size 11 works well. For many athletic or 'tennis' shoe brands, I'll end up needing an 11 1/2 or occasionally even a 12. With that said:

The only Alpinestars boots I've ever owned are some now-old Tech 4 motocross boots. They're American size 11, and they fit well over THICK motocross socks, but I did put in an aftermarket insole (Answer? I don't remember any more).

I recently got some Xpd (Spidi) XP7 WRS boots, which seem to be quite similar in concept to the S-MX Plus from Alps. They're euro size 45, which is listed as equivalent to American size 11 on most charts; occasionally I've seen it listed as crossing over to 10 1/2. These boots are exactly right in terms of length, but they're quite 'roomy' over the instep and through the ankle area. In other words, I couldn't do a smaller size, but these aren't snug like my MX boots were. They adjust well, but only through the calf area; no adjusters over the instep and forefoot like those MX boots had.

Hope that helps some.
