Exclamation Engine running issues help please

Hi there
So I was riding to work the other day I had gotten about 10 miles when then bike started to splutter and the engine died. I then left it for a min and tried starting her up she fired after a few attempts after another mile or so it did it again and I started it up again after a min or two but it was struggling to start. Anyway it did this about 4 times until the battery ran flat from me trying to start it.
I got it home drained the tank cleaned the carbs put new air filter in new fuel.
After this it fired up straight away I thought maybe bad fuel or carbs were blocked. But after having it sit there for a min then riding it round for a couple more it did it again the revs started to drop when I give it more gas it picked up then drop picked up then dropped then finally died on me. It would not start after that so I left it. Then I went back to it an hour later and tried again it fired straight up.

Does anybody have any ideas on what the hell is the problem.

Iv got some new spark plugs to fit.

So far iv drained the tank and put fresh fuel in
Changed air filter
Top up oil
Charged battery up to it max
And cusred a lot
Now if anybody would like to no what bike it is its a yamaha tdm 850
I know it's not the right place for it but iv got a cbr 600 fx
And the help I have had of this site is great.
Thank you

Sounds like a low fuel flow to the carbs issue. Not sure what that bike has on it but check things like the fuel pump, kinked feed line, clogged filter, and clogged petcock.

When I took off the fuel tank And removed the fuel pipe in side the tank there were two white sticks with mesh on the end one I think for when fuel it's on and one for reserve. Also I was looking for an online fuel filter but there isn't on on. Also I just started it up a couple of mins ago and it smelt like it was running lean but as I just started it I thought this was normall my cbr does it but not as strong and mainly when I put the choke on.

Check the r/r. If it's failing, when it heats up, it starves the coils.
Hence little/no spark. Cools down, runs ok...till it heats up again.

Look for signs of heat-related damage to the r/r and the connector from the harness.

Hope this helps, Ern

Start with a visual inspection. If it looks toasty, it is.

Thank you for that it will help I changed the spark plugs and it fired up very nicely. The old spark plugs were black at the ends not wet but dry black.
I took it for a 5 min spin and it seemed ok. Could this have been the problem could spark plugs shut the bike down aswell as old fuel.
Thinking about it I suppose it could have.
Old fuel
Dirty carbs and old plugs
But would it just die like it did not convinced.
Anyway as I have no idea what the rectifer looks like think I will search it and take a look,
MATT you have helped me a lot over the past year or so do you have any knowledge on the yamaha tdm 850 it's 92 model 3vd
There were not very popular in the uk for some reason.
Also while am on the subject I had the tdm on the paddock stand so thought I would go through the gears in 1st and2nd it seemed ok but 3,4 and 5th seemed like there was a whining noise coming from gear box weather this was because I wasn't giving it the revs not sure.
