zzzz help with speakers
Ok so I reformatted my comp and reinstalled XP Pro today, but now my sound is gone. My speakers don't work, my headphones don't work. I installed all the drivers from the discs that I had. The speakers came with the Dell it came with when I got it 4 years ago, but have since upgraded everything.
Speakers are Harmon/Kardon and I know there was no driver disc for them. What the hell can I do to fix this.

Did you say you upgraded the sound card from stock?
If it is the stock sound card, go to the dell website and find your model of computer. It will have a complete list of drivers available. If you tell me what model you have I could probably go and find it for you.
If it is NOT a stock sound card, go to the manufacturers page and find your sound card. There will be a driver listed for it.

You may have done this , but if you have not?
Go to your "control panel" ...
hit " system " bang on "device manager" scroll down to "sound and video controllers" check to see if any devices are installed ... check for the dreaded yellow exclamation marks identifying incorrectly installed or device /drivers.. with problems..
If yellow thingies are showing ... try uninstalling those devices then reboot and reinstall those device drivers....

The first thing you need to do is identify any issues that may be causing this problem mate ..

I am known to be a little **** when it comes to written text
(I have already had my chain rattled by a few on here already for this problem I have )
Because , PC and tech stuff in general is such a broad field, I have saying when it come to problems..
All of us are only as smart with them, till we hit the bloody wall....
I have been giving PC help free for many years online .. and as you would know... many have that bloody wall not to far away from them....
I myself know a **** load of stuff ( 13 years of dribble packed inside my head ) regarding many areas of PC use , administration , internet/website stuff, scripting ect ....
but by jingo's , once I get to a point where the knowledge of any process exceeds my experience ... I become a newbee yet again and out come's the read me's..
I always assume the worst with most users mate

First...Do you have the plugged into the right port? If you have a sound blaster, it's usually the 2nd one in from the game port. If it's built in, I would guess the middle one. They are color coded, lime green is usually speakers.
Check to make sure volume is turned up and the speakers are powered on.
Make sure the computer isn't on mute (look for speaker icon in your system tray next to the clock on the lower right hand side).
Open the speaker settings and make sure that the volume is turned up there also.
Definitely do what was suggested above. You use the device manager to make sure the drivers are properly installed and not disabled.

I had the same prob with drivers, by any chance did you install Service Pack 3? (or could have come in one of their mediocre upgrades) Causes problems with some the On Board sound (have a look at the Microsoft site). I eventually just installed a sound card & it worked no wukkin furries.
