Would these be fine bikes to start on?

You know what I would suggest? Get something like a XR400 or XR650 or something. I would almost say the XR400, because it is a light bike, and is fast enough to be around town, and the power to weight is still good that you can have your fun on it. But also the weight thing when it is light you'll get use to handling a bike and when you get into something with more weight you'll be like "whatever" Also if you are able to have some fun in the dirt, you'll get use to sliding the tires, and a good dirt rider learns street just that much faster. I have had many friends learn on dirt bikes and then when they get old enough they step up to street bikes. And they start off a lot faster than I did when i just started off from street bike.

i started on a yamaha maxim 650 1980. Good starter bike. your one of the smarter ones to start out on a bike like this. Either bike should be a good choice for you except for the golcwing...lol Just think small, it might not have as much ***** as a sport bike, but you will learn much from riding it.although they still have quite the get up n go probably...
good luck convincing your parents, i rebuilt my bike with my father who is a rider, then once i got my license i slipped into the cbr scene. its gotta be harder if neither of them ride

Mine too, but now my dad has a Goldwing Aspencade and an Interstate.
And believe me, they are as heavy as they look. And just as expensive to maintain. I would get whatever they'll let you get, just to get started and show them it's not really as dangerous as someone who has never ridden says they are. Obviously there is more of a risk than in a car, but you get my point. Get out there get riding no matter what it's on. For some reason sportbikes have a bad rep. I'm trying to get my wife on a bike but she told me, "I would never buy a sportbike like yours. I would rather have a cruiser because they are less dangerous." You can imagine the conversation that ensued after that.

if you should buy any single cam honda, join the forum at www.sohc4.net good bunch of folks over there.
i highly recommend going the 250 route. new 08's are about $4k out the door new. you could also find a used old body style on craigslist for about 2 grand. that way, it wont rape you on insurance because of your age and inexperience. you can ride it for a season or two, and still sell it for what you paid. my first 500 miles or so on a bike were on a 250. it really lets you learn the basics and lets you learn from mistakes, without throwing you to the ground. another bike to maybe look at is a used ninja 500. low seat height, cheap, easy as hell to ride.
^x2 gold wings are 2 wheeled tanks. i rode my buddy's ninja 650 around the other day, then sat on my other friend's 03 goldwing....frickin thing weighs like 800 pounds...it's horrible! like a damn couch on 2 wheels.
