I'VE ALWAYS KNOWN THEM TO BE 1 SIMPLE THING.

Well, if I understand your rant correctly:
Some mufflers do bolt on w/ a 3 bolt patter; Suzuki's used to be big on this, ie the busa and older gixxers. The muffler bolted on via a flange to the oem mid pipe. You only needed the muffler.
A slip on does just that, it slips on. The mid pipe slips onto the header tube, then the muffler goes onto the mid pipe. In the kit is a mid pipe and muffler.
That's my understanding of it.
Then a full system is everything right up to the head. also about $800 for most.
