Default Welders?

I'm in the market for a mig welder. Looking for a 220v model that can function with or without gas.
what do you all use? I'm looking at the Hobart Handler 187 right now. something in the sub $800 range.
could someone more knowledeable on the subject chime in and give me some input on what would be the best all-around mig welder for general welding?

Default RE: Welders?

I'm no pro by any means but we have a Hobart welder at my dads place that works just fine. He picked it up for around $200-300 and we use flux wire so there is no need for gas. All the welder friends that I have really reccomend gas though, helps keep welds clean. And anyway, that Hobart that we have can use gas also, you just need to use the proper wire. What kind of welding do you expect to do?
