ISO is a an image of a disc. A virtual drive...think of having a dvd drive listed in your my computer, but it doesnt really exist in your physical computer. Daemon tools emulates (acts like) there is a drive there, and you can mount (aka open) the image file and watch it like you had just inserted a movie into the dvd drive. Only this way, there is no DVD, its an ISO, and there is no drive, its virtual.

You can pull the video out and exclude the menus if you want using dvd shrink as well.

is it necesary to set it up in a "virtual drive"? wouldnt that take up space unnecisarily? once its on the hard drive, can't you just openit and play it with, say windows media player? and i downloaded dvd shrink, it waas said earlier to convert it to a .AVI, is that in order to by pass having a virtual drive?

I use DVD Shrink to rip to ISO, then Daemon Tools to mount it in a virtual DVD drive. Bam, no converting, no compressing.
Wow, someone who knows what they're talking about. FROM SAN ANTONIO of all places.

I always hated the 2 step process...anybody know a good all-in-one ripper and converter?

There is. I use a program called Handbrake. It was originally for the Mac, but they've release Windows versions as well. GREAT application that has a LOT of advanced settings, customizable resolutions, presets, a variety of different encoding processes, etc. A VERY good piece of software........and not to mention it's perfectly free.

the problem with DVD Shrink is it will not break the newer movie encryptions, due to the fact that it is no longer updated....DVD Fab decryptor is updated frequently as needed to decrypt whatever the latest and greatest encryptions are....and DVD Fab will remove all the menus, previews, languauges, etc etc so you can fit the whole movie typically at 100% quality on a single layer DVD disc.

i use Clone DVD 2 and/or Nero to burn to the discs.....

and use Verbatim or TY DVD discs.....only the best... i think i have had only 2 coasters in about 250-300 movies burned

There's no space taking up when an iso file is mounted. Its just like putting the dvd in a dvd drive. It doesnt make a copy of the file on the harddrive and move it somewhere else.

And you have had what problems with recent DVD's? I don't think they've come out with any new encryptions.

Iron Man came out last week and DVD shrink finished it in 5 minutes. What do you say to that?

Right. The virtual drive just acts like there is an extra dvd drive in your computer, it then mounts, opens the ISO, which is all the data. No extra data copied as ranger said. You dont have to use the virtual drive at all, thats just my chosen method of storing and watching movies.

The only movie I ever had issues with is Rush Hour 3. Granted, I have not ripped very many movies lately at all.
