I use DVD Shrink to rip to ISO, then Daemon Tools to mount it in a virtual DVD drive. Bam, no converting, no compressing.

Bingo. You can use dvd shrink to put the dvd on your harddrive in two sizes. 8.5GB (original size) or 4.7GB (compressed so it'll fit on one regular dvd). Also when it does its scan. Click on the main movie and deselect any foreign languages. They tend to take up space (up to 400mb). Deselect them and it wont compress so much.
Also after clickin on "Backup", a menu pops up. Click on Quality settings and set to smooth or extra smooth. It takes longer to backup but makes the video more enjoyable to watch, especially for movies with a lot of camera movement.
