Triumph Bonneville ... ?
dude, get the bonnie, you can make those things kick *** with little money. you can get clubman bars (or shorter ones) to give you a better stance, jet kit and exhaust, pod filters, and all of a sudden you have a bitchin' cafe racer that can make the miles.
i've never had a bonnie, but i've had a few parallel twins that make similar hp/tq, and they're fun as hell. nowhere near the power of your 600, but i'd say they're even more fun to ride under 80mph because of the comfort, sound, and feeling of the motor. anything more than that though (it won't even be like riding a bike - for what you're used to with the cbr)...
if you are truly going across country, do not take the cbr.... you can look at some sites (iron butt association) - and get some tips...

Take the money to buy the Triumph and "spend" it on the CBR to make it more comfortable. I have ridden a "Trip around Texas" which was about 2,200 miles(most do about 3,100) on my 929 and it was fun. Of course it wasn't the MOST comfortable but sportbikes aren't meant to be comfortable, IMO.

You would be in a group with the Aussies and NZ's and so on.... not cool.
(if your a foreigner)
I was considering a Bonneville last, actually a Kawasaki W800. Then Triumph dropped their prices on the standard Bonneville. Probably for the same romantic reasoning, laid back riding, old school nostalgia mixed with modern day etc. This type of bike is good for a weekender & so on, but the novelty will wear off pretty quick when your left foot falls off from having to change down a gear all the time. Take one for a test ride & you will soon realise their strengths & weaknesses.

Welllllll
went and looked at some Triumphs today. I didn't really like the Boneville as much in person as i thought I would. however, I did really like the Thruxton they had up there. 2012 black / gold stripe one.
With that said, I still think i'll be taking the CBR on the trip. The Thruxton has a less aggressive riding position, but its still a little on the wrists. Wouldn't be a lot easier to strap luggage to it versus my CBR, so I don't see that many advantage.
I bought some Cortec rear bags / tank bags for the CBR by the way.
Plus with 67hp, i'd be concerned about higher cruising speeds / merging etc. Although this might be unfounded. Am taking a Thruxton for a test drive next weekend. I'm still thinking about purchasing one b/c well, I thought they were pretty sweet.
So CBR on the trip it is. Details and planned route to come shortly. Plus the pictures with the CBR will be well worth it.
