Default Tivo and the like

Heres the deal, I want to get something to record TV, but I dont want to pay monthly and have all these bells and whistles that I do not need. Tivo looks cool, but I dont care that it can record everything of a TV show. I just want something to where I can tell it what time to record a TV show. What options do I have? Isnt there some product you can buy that doesnt need a monthly service plan? and please explain everything in laymen's terms, im a computer junkie and do not know much about TV.

And I swear to all of the holy dieties if some numbf*** tells me to get a VCR, Ill start an efight.

I'm fairly sure you WANT Tivo. You dont have to pay monthly service for it.

I have digital cable. My thinking is that I can build a computer with a huge hard drive and do the same thing with some software.

Also a quote from the tivo website:
A subscription to the TiVo service is required and the TiVo box will not work without a paid subscription to the TiVo service. That means that if you choose to cancel the subscription you are purchasing today, the box will no longer work.

u can make one put off a old pc. but the cost is higher at the start becouse all the parts and time u need to make one but it will pay for its self in a wile. but there is no monthly fee only the power the pc/dvr uses.
