Default UPDATE: Tivo anyone? i thinking about it. and hacking it.

hey so i am thinking of getting a tivo becouse i am always at work or asleep when good shows are on. i want one but i dont know if i can do it all. i want to hack it a little and get a big hard drive and get connected throgh a ethernet port. i was just wundering if anyone here has done it??? or if u even have one.

i am not ganna buy a new one, i am getting one of ebay for like 50 bucks and putting a 250 gig drive in it that i have. the usb to ethernet cord is like 20 bucks. new software. basicly the works. i am ganna read up.
there cheap http://search.ebay.com/search/search...amp;category0=

UPDATE: july-02-07 so i have almost finished. i added another hard drive to my tivo. it was a 40hr tivo now its a 130hr tivo. i only added a 80 gig drive to it because all my other big drives where all sata and tivo uses ide. i will buy a sata to ide converter later but now i am good.

i used this http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hins...to/index9.html

i am just wating for my usb to ethernet adapter to come in the mail.

so my total cost are as so

tivo off ebay
$45
i made my own bracket to add a second drive so that was free but u can buy them for $20 http://www.weaknees.com/twinbreeze.php
software was also free but it was alot more harder than if u buy the software that sets up drives on its own. its also $20 called instantcake http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/instantcake.cfm
hard drive was free also cuz i use a old one i had laying around but a 80gig drive is like $40 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822140118
and the tivo service is 16 bucks a month.
and usb to ethernet adapter was 30 bucks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124122

so for me its was 90 bucks.

so yea u can also do this with almost all dvr`s.

I cannot stand to watch anything but my pre-recorded programs anymore. You can fast forward through all those moronic commercials. Tivo is the best!

i still dont have any type of DVR, even at $10/mo from my cable co, i still have not done it. tell me more about this hacking, what are you trying to accomplish you cant do with a standard one? and what ethernet capabilities are you looking at, and what are the possibilities? im assuming it doesnt have cat-5 to begin with right? will it let you hook it into the network and pull videos?

I have a Motorola HD-DVR through my cable company. It has a 80GB hard drive which is plenty big enough for me. I don't think I could live without my DVR... never miss another show, and like Voodoo said it gets rid of the damn commercials!

I have Sirius radio, and I wish they had a "DAR" (digital audio replay?)option. There are a lot of shows I can't listen to which I would like to record, and I would also like to ditch the radio commercials. If I hear about Adam and Eve.com one more time, I am going to flip. Hey, I like to slap the hog as much as the next guy, but my kids are in the car Sirius...give me a break on thebuy porncommercials. If I had "DAR" I could fast forward that stuff!

^^^must just be XM because I have commercials like crazy on Sirius. By the way, I thought Sirius bought XM...I will admit I am not very smart, though.
