talk about 'not meant to be'...
I always had a corn snake or a black ratsnake growing up, caught 'em in the fields.
I had a bubble gum rat snake (caught) and an albino yellow rat snake (bought) when I was a kid and within a few weeks each got loose in my house. Parents were pretty mad, obviously. Never saw the bubble gum rat again, but we found shed skins for months and then next time I saw the yellow rat around our property was years later and the damn thing had to be 4 feet long.. Makes me smile to think about, though. To be a kid again... so simple!
Never been bit with all the snakes I've had around. I am not a fan pythons for the very reason that they seem to be more nervous around people. They either play dead or get skittish. Rat/corn/king snakes generally take to people and are calm while being handled.
My first corn only bit one person, and totally deserved it. I warned my friend about ten times that the snake was tired and wanted to stay in its hide....well the snakee bit him and didn't even break the skin.
