Should I be mad?
Not really incredibly serious no. I have no grand ideas that I am immune to it, and I will get a bunch of new gear before this season, because I know what the odds are. However, there's odds, and then there's people trying to turn odds into matter of fact statements.
It took me 2 years till I had my first good spill, and it was all my fault. Chit happens, and the harder you push limits, the uglier the outcome is going to be. Always remember "Stupid hurts" LOL
I wouldn't be mad ... I have not read all of this thread but it you say you get along well it just sounds like he feels he knows you well enough to mention about laying the bike down, probably as a warning to be careful or buy better gear ... as likely as some may argue it is, it's not always the case I rode 17 years on fast bikes before I dropped my 600 last year and that was bad health, others topple them over in the drive the first day and maybe crash within a week .. there is no rule to say you will or you won't ... all any of us can do out there is take care and know our limitations, we ride with a positive attitude that we won't crash, sure we know it's possible but if you ride with a negative attitude as in "oh God I'm gonna crash one day soon" well all I can say is self fulfilling prophecies .... don't get bent out of shape over people's ideas of if you will crash or not, you, yourself have no intention of crashing, keep that thought and stay safe :-)
Good luck
Jules
I don't really see what the big deal is. Sure, it sounds like the guy was trying to use a lame sales ploy to get you into the idea of buying the bike... but in the end, the statistics are in his favor.
I wouldn't really try to over-think it.

You, me, a ridercoach at the MSF and most everyone here wouldn't be doing it with any malice. Getting them to wear gear and getting them not to focus on falling (accepting it as inevitable) will get them to ride safer and smarter.
But I don't see this guy trying to do that from what's been told. Seemed more malicious. I've heard it with the intent to be helpful and appreciate the sentiment. I've heard it born from ignorance (the 'OMG those things are so dangerous') and mostly ignore it, sometimes educating them a little. But there are also those twisted chits out there who get some perverse pleasure from trying to torment riders. Those guys are cvnts who deserve a good *** kicking.
The guy at work who tried it with me tried telling me a bullchit story of an accident he "saw". Allegedly the rider t-boned a car and highsided, landing on his helmet. He was allegedly ok, standing up after the wreck and talking with just a trickle of blood seen in the facemask. Allegedly when he took his helmet off, his head split open like a melon and he died standing up with his brains exposed.
How many bs things can you find in that story and why would anyone relay such bs to a person with a new bike? And I went a week tolerating that crap before I finally began to lose my temper.

Ya I got the full treatment
According to him, the average lifespan of a rider in Greece is about 10 blocks
- Shoelace catches in chain, yanking foot thru sprocket requiring amputation
- Lowside under a car which proceeds to run over the bike and rider
- Any number of 'never saw the bike *kersplat*' wrecks

Never really understood the fascination the riding community has with crashing. Most everyone downs a bike at some time or another, not a big deal. I've crashed, badly. It sucked, I rebuilt the bike and when I was healed enough I kept riding. Some people don't, some people won't and some people can't after a wreck. Either way there's nothing you can do about it except ride smart and gear up, which you should all be doing anyways. It's not like there's some cosmic bike voodoo crash god we must all appease in order to ride safely. Just dress for the almost inevitable crash, enjoy the ride and quit thinking about it. Accept the fact that your going to crash, that way if you don't it'll be like a nice surprise.
By the way, your going to crash.. woogie woogie....
