Default Please read:

Here's how it is in my neck of the woods:

I live in Norway, in a small (but busy) town. There's basically no accidents that happen in or around town, things are pretty much backed up and slow going. (Not saying accidents never happen, but it's very few and far between.)

So I'm guessing that it'd be relatively safe to have my daughter with me in and around town. People drive with their kids daily on their *shudder* mopeds.

Now, my daughter lives with her mom (we're divorced) about 40 minutes away. There's two ways to get there. The "old" way, a lot of quiet back roads or the "new" way via the freeway.

Even on the "old" way, accidents happen, but not near as much as the freeway which is deemed to be extremely dangerous, one of the most dangerous in the entire EU.

So with that in mind, what do you think?

I'd never take the freeway with her on board, I love her more than anything in this world, but this MC will be my only mode of transportation. Having a car costs way too much, even for a crappy clunker.

Default as the father ,its your choice

harness or no harness , i wouldnt take the chance, especially if you will be constantly commuting with her, risk goes up when its not just the "every once and a while". do what you gotta do, just my opinion...

I totally understand what ya'll are saying. But using it to commute around this little town can't be too hazardous? I've pretty much rethought taking her to and from her mom's on the bike, she'll have to grow a few years before I'd do that. (Thanks all for the input on that issue.)

But if people are comfortable using their scooters around town and haul their kids with it, it should be basically the same as doing it on a bigger bike?

I have a 7 year old and a 5 year old that I take on rides. It no more dangerous for them as any other passenger. First they need to be taught how to be a good rider. My daughters always have to wear jacket, jeans and sturdy shoes, helmet gloves.
The harderst part is getting gear for kids. There are not alot of companies that make stuff for them.

The rides we go on are only 5-10 at a time. We have signals that they do to let me know if they need to stop. I also bought a corbin seat and a backrest to give them greater security and comfort. I am working on making armrests for them.

Awesome Cman. I do agree that teaching your kids how to ride the proper way is very important, not to mention the right clothes / safety gear.

I've only got a helmet so far for my kid. But I think she's already outgrown it, so this summer I'm going to have to sit down and go order a "full kit" for her.

Any recommendations?

HjC has good selection of youth helmets and are can be gotten cheap. For gear you really have to look to MX gear for youth stuff. I tried womens XS but the sleeves are way too long. You got to go youth in the clothes. I shopped for heavy denim pants and and jackets for them. I am in the process of getting MX boots for them to wear. Heavy MX Gloves too. You got to be creative.

People will say you are crazy, and maybe I am. I think it is no less dangerous than a fopur wheeler or dirt bike, and at least I am the one driving and not them.

I used to take my boy on a lot of short rides around a planned residential neighborhood when he was very young. We did that for many years. But that's all it was, a ride. Never got out of 2nd gear. Never got over about 25 mph. Never ANY traffic, and if I saw someone, I pulled over. We lived through it and he is one hell of a biker now, but I was extraordinarily careful and it scared the crap out of me. He's now 20 and it has taken me about 3 years to really get comfortable riding with him when he is on his own bike.

Actually going out on real roads with real traffic and real intersections would be way too scary for me, though I'm sure he would have been fine with it.

I've taken both my daughter and my son on the back of my bike .

The thing is risk assessment , for me that means don't take any . They need the right gear , they need to be told what to do and you need to take it slow especially when there is any traffic around.

Like Drax13 , my daughter is a great passenger , I wouldn't know she was there either . My wife and my son however wriggle like they've got a worm up their *** , I don't really enjoy having them on the back of my bike.

Also kids grow so fast , they'll grow out of the gear faster than you can buy it , so apart from the helmet , buy good second hand gear , you can always sell it on once they've out grown it.
